Our Junior Cricket
The Kensington District Cricket Club philosophy is to nurture young cricketing talent and provide the best possible coaches, facilities and environment in order for them to develop. Success is not based on win at all costs, but how many players progress through the grades at the club, are chosen in state development squads and play in state junior teams. This may be at odds with winning junior premierships, as our juniors will be tested in higher grade competitions to further their individual development, potentially at the detriment of a particular team performance or place on a ladder.

Club Philosophy
The Kensington District Cricket Club (KDCC) philosophy is to nurture young cricketing talent and provide the best possible coaches, facilities and environment in order for them to develop.
Our Aim
The role of the KDCC junior program is to identify young talented cricketers and provide them with a high-quality coaching environment and playing experience in order for them to reach a level that will allow them to progress to senior cricket for the club, for the state and ultimately, for Australia.
Our Expectation
At KDCC we strive to provide a junior environment where each player has fun and enjoys their cricket, however, we do expect a level of commitment and discipline in excess of that expected at community level. Therefore, KDCC does expect each player to conduct themselves on a set of values while representing our club. These are non-negotiable
Discipline We are always on time and always have the correct playing kit and equipment. We do not use mobile phones while training or during matches and focus on our coach’s instructions
Play We train and play in a positive and professional manner
Respect We show respect to each other, to the opposition players, the club, officials and spectators. We will hold ourselves to account for our actions
Honesty We strive to create an environment where coaches and players can reflect honestly on their performance.
Teamwork We work together and always support each other with an aim to continuously drive to improve individually, as a team and as a club
Selection and Talent identification
There will be some rotation of teams so that all players in each squad are playing regular matches.
The coaches will ensure that ALL players have a role to play in each game, whether that is as a bowler, batsman, wicket keeper or all-rounder. One difficulty we face however is that all players in our squads are talented and most players regard themselves as all-rounders - typically being the main batsman and bowler for their school/community club team. When setting our orders, someone has to bat at eleven and there are not enough overs for everyone to get a long bowling spell.
As a Premier Grade club, we will need to invest more heavily in, and provide more opportunities for, those players identified by the coaches as having the greatest chance of progressing to A Grade level and beyond.
Players can earn opportunities for themselves through:
- • Performances, work ethic and discipline at training
- • Performances in games
- • Demonstrating traits and abilities that the coaches believe will help make them good cricketers in the long term
As players progress through the U14/U16 age groups at KDCC they will begin to ‘specialise’ in the skill(s) of the game in which they show the most potential. Batting and bowling orders will be rotated to a degree however over time these orders start being set in terms of quality more so than equal opportunity.
Captaincy and Leadership
Setting fields and making bowling changes are important skills of the game that must be practised in match conditions by our junior captains. Players who are shielded from making these decisions will never learn how to read and influence a game. These skills are as important to the game of cricket as batting and bowling.
Player development
The Club's focus at all times is on developing the skill, knowledge and character of our players. The Club will not concern itself with the conduct, decision-making, rulings, tactics, actions or sportsmanship of;
- • Umpires;
- • Opposition Coaches, Parents and Players;
- • SACA.
No Excuses
Parents and coaches will not make excuses for a player's performances. Conditions are not always favourable and if parents or coaches start making excuses then the player will start looking for reasons to fail. Whether the excuses are half-true or not, blaming external factors will create a very negative mindset and limit the player's chances for success. Each player has to take responsibility for his performances and to focus on making sure that he is performing his basics correctly.
Examples of excuses - he always struggles facing spinners when he first goes in; he hates batting against left-armers; he had to go in 5 minutes before drinks; he had to come in right when the opening bowlers came back on; we had to race between school and club cricket and he didn't get a chance to settle; he hates opening the batting; it was a really up-and-down pitch; the umpire fired him; he had to bowl into a gale; he had to bowl to their best batsman; he had to run in 6 events at sports day yesterday; he had to field all morning for school; it was a really short boundary etc.
We wish to create a culture where the players desire to succeed ensures they will bat, bowl or field to any opposition in any circumstance.
KDCC Junior Coaching Team
Team Clothing 20/21
Kensington District Cricket Club (KDCC) believes that the presentation of their junior players at games and training sessions is important in establishing and maintaining club culture, team respect and commitment. Therefore, the club has determined there is a minimum team-wear requirement for season 2020/21.
Academy
Players are expected to arrive, play and depart (matches or training) in the club 2-day polo shirt and either white or cream pants (Kensington Pants are optional). The only compulsory purchase is a 2-day Polo shirt (long or short sleeve) and a 1-day club cap. However, players are more than welcome to purchase other training items from the KDCC range.
U/14 & U/16
Presentation of our Junior players at both training and on match days for arrival, participation and departure will be in team colours.
2-Day & 1-Day Games - It is compulsory for each player to play in a KDCC 2 day short or long sleeve cream polo, preferably KDCC cream trousers (white trousers are OK but we would rather KDCC creams). Baggy Browns with player initials are being introduced this season as a compulsory item in recognition of a player being selected to represent KDCC at U14 or U16 level. Caps should be purchased online and will be presented to players by one of our A-Grade seniors. On colder days a KDCC heritage wool/acrylic sleeveless or long sleeve jumper can be worn but it is not compulsory, only warm…
The Browns 1-Day Clothing - It is compulsory for each player to have a 1-Day collared shirt (either short or long sleeve), a 1-Day Pants and a 1-Day Cap. The 1-Day clothing will be worn to and from games and can be worn as well for training. KDCC Training T Shirts, Singlets & Shorts are also available as extra clothing if required at training by any players. Players are permitted to wear KDCC Training Shorts to and from games when worn with the 1-Day collared shirt.
It is expected that players can be personally responsible for wearing the correct clothing to training. As an example, school sports clothing etc should not be worn.
Any KDCC 2-Day or 1-Day clothing from last year can be worn in 20/21 as long as it fits into the above criteria.
