Sunday 20th/10/2024 at Parkinson Oval saw Kensington District Cricket Club continue their campaign in the West End One Day Cup with a dominant display against Woodville. Following a competitive two-day fixture on Saturday, skipper Josh Doyle confidently elected to bat after winning the toss in ideal conditions for a high-scoring contest.

Christian Leddicoat set the foundation early with a composed 64 off 70 balls, supported by Jason Sangha’s explosive 38 from just 27 balls. But it was the back-end partnership between Thornton (68 from 78) and Cleggett, who finished unbeaten on 71* from 64 balls, that turned the innings into a formidable one. Their composed yet aggressive approach in the final overs punished the Woodville attack, with Cleggett’s clean striking being a standout.

Woodville’s bowling was led by Cameron Behrendt, who grabbed 2 wickets, but they struggled to contain Kensington’s deep batting lineup, with extras proving costly as they conceded 21 in wides and no-balls.

Chasing 296 for victory, Woodville’s reply started with a bang, thanks to skipper Harvey Brennan’s blistering 82 off just 44 balls, an innings that featured seven sixes and saw the ball fly to all parts of the ground. However, once he fell, brilliantly caught and bowled by Doyle, Woodville’s hopes of a chase quickly diminished.

Kensington’s bowlers, led by Ryan Percival (2/14) and Doyle (1/27 from 10 economical overs), applied pressure consistently. Lloyd Pope chipped in with the key wicket of Cameron Behrendt, while two run-outs from Jason Sangha and Sam Rahaley further stifled Woodville’s progress. Woodville ended their innings at 6/167 after 32 overs, well short of the target.

Kensington’s all-round performance secured a comfortable 128-run victory, with contributions from both bat and ball ensuring a dominant display.

Key Performances:

  • James Cleggett: 71* (64 balls, 8 fours, 1 six)
  • Henry Thornton: 68 (78 balls, 4 fours, 1 six)
  • Christian Leddicoat: 64 (70 balls, 6 fours, 2 sixes)

  • Joshua Doyle: 10 overs, 1/27 & 23 (41 balls)
