It’s always special when club legends drop by Kensington, and this week we were lucky to catch up with one of our most cherished past players, Tim May. Tim grew up around our club—literally! As a kid, he even operated the old scoreboard during A Grade matches.

Tim’s connection to Kensington is deep. After starting with us, he went on to represent South Australia and Australia in a decorated career. It seems cricket runs in the family, as Tim’s son Ben followed in his father’s footsteps, progressing from our juniors all the way to A Grade, also earning state honors.

Over his career, Tim played 113 first-class matches for South Australia, taking 326 wickets at an average of 34.32. He went on to represent Australia in 24 Test matches, claiming 75 wickets at an average of 34.74, and played 47 One Day Internationals, taking 39 wickets. Known for his ability to turn the ball sharply, Tim was a vital weapon in Australia’s bowling attack. In one of his most memorable Test matches, he showed grit with the bat too, scoring a hard-fought 42 against the West Indies at Adelaide Oval in 1993. Australia narrowly lost that epic match by just one run, but Tim’s heroics left a lasting impression.

During the 1980s and early 90s, Tim was a dominant force for Kensington, playing alongside club stalwarts such as Peter Brinsley and Andrew Rumbelow, and he shared a deeply close bond with the beloved Barry “Nugget” Rees. His contributions were instrumental during an era that saw Kensington consistently competing at the highest level of grade cricket.

While Tim was in town, our very own Andrew Rumbelow made sure he got something special—his official Baggy Brown cap, with Tim’s Kensington player number 250 proudly reflected on it! A fitting reminder of his lifelong connection to our club. Tim is now back in the US but will return for the upcoming Test Match, where he’ll be a guest speaker at the Norwood FC Test Match luncheon. We’re hopeful that we can host Tim at the club during his next trip and properly celebrate his Kensington legacy.

Once a Brown, always a Brown! 💛
